Smart Gym is a low-cost, big box gym chain based in Taiwan, offering an innovative and brand new gym experience. In just a few taps on the Smart Gym app, users would be able to access to everything they need from signing up membership, to paying bills, to booking classes. Most importantly, the mobile app is designed to connect to every workout machine and sync user’ fitness data with gym equipment instantly.
In revenue terms, the fitness industry growth rate is 2.6% globally. According to the latest IHRSA report, total industry revenue was an estimated $87.5 billion in 2018, up from $85.2 billion in 2017. (Taiwan fitness industry increased revenue by 142.3% in 4 years.) The fitness industry is not just growing, but it also has changed. The technology plays a big part of it. Retaining members is harder than ever. In the last year, gym memberships have risen by only 5%, but subscriptions to fitness app have gone up to 300%.
Smart Gym’s big idea is to create a fitness community by bringing members and trainers together and providing a friendly and affordable workout environment. The challenge is to seamlessly integrate the gym environment and all the equipment (hardware) with the mobile app and content management system (software). Before getting into the technical challenges, our first step was to define where Smart Gym is standing in the mind of their users, who are the target users and what are the user needs? So we conducted a few stakeholder interviews and user interviews.
Once we completed and consolidated the insights from our interviews and research, the critical challenge we found out was the process of signing up and paying for the membership. Then, we began to simplify the user flow and to provide the guidance all the way from the beginning to the end, making sure all the membership information is clear and relevant to our users.
With little to no staff interaction with customers in the gym, we have to make absolutely sure that we have a standout content. By making carefully selections of color scheme and we decided that the overall visual needs to bring the energy and warmness from people and class photography. Also, by emphasizing on the big typography and data visualization, it creates a better legibility and visual hierarchy for users to easily review their live results at a glance.
